Be clear about what you are booking: this is not a holiday park but a single chalet, for eight people, let by the agency Ardenne Résidences on the heights above Malmedy. No pool, no entertainment programme, no reception, no shops on site. In exchange, you have the place to yourselves, with a wood-fired hot tub, a sauna, a log fire and an open view. This format suits a couple, a birthday or two families who want a whole house, and not at all those counting on facilities to keep children busy.

The High Fens begin a quarter of an hour away. The Signal de Botrange, the highest point in Belgium at 694 metres, gives access to the boardwalks that cross the peat bog; from December to March, sixty kilometres of cross-country ski trails are laid out there and equipment can be hired on site. Reinhardstein castle overlooks the Warche seventeen minutes away, and Lake Robertville is sixteen, with swimming from June to September. Spa-Francorchamps is a quarter of an hour away. Malmedy is ten minutes away, and its carnival, the Cwarmê, is held four days before Shrove Tuesday.

Plan the logistics: no restaurant on site, so book a table or do your shopping on the way up. The Hostellerie Trôs Marets is four minutes away, the Domaine des Hautes Fagnes at Ovifat seventeen.
