Snow first, because it decides everything else

Two Belgian ski areas appear on our pages, and both carry the same warning. La Baraque de Fraiture, 17 minutes from Center Parcs Les Ardennes and 15 from Vayamundo Houffalize, is recorded as open from December to March, but subject to snow. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing at the Signal de Botrange, 15 minutes from Chalet Le Haut Lieu in Malmedy, are recorded from December to March, with no snow condition attached on our pages.

In the Ardennes that condition is met for only a few days each winter, and never on the same dates from one year to the next. Booking a Christmas weekend on the strength of Belgian skiing is a gamble. Take the park for the forest, and treat snow as a bonus if it comes.

The only ski area on our pages that is not in the Ardennes is German: Winterberg, in the Sauerland, 5 minutes from Landal Ferienpark Winterberg and 21 from Center Parcs Park Hochsauerland. It is recorded from December to March, and its bobsleigh run from November to March. Reckon on 4h 11m from Brussels for the first and 4h 26m for the second, which makes them several-night stays rather than weekends. Neither has a public score in our data.

The parks where the forest is enough

Twenty-six parks in our selection have forest or hills in their setting. Four of them carry a December weekend without owing anything to the weather, each in its own way.

Center Parcs Les Ardennes (Vielsalm), 2h 02m from Brussels and 54 minutes from Liège, advertises 300 hectares of forest around the cottages, an Aqua Mundo with a wild river and VIP cottages with a sauna. Stavelot and its abbey are 19 minutes away, Reinhardstein castle at 43, the Bastogne War Museum at 41. None of those outings closes in winter. Booking.com score 7.4/10 on 9 September 2026.

Vayamundo Houffalize, 2h 00m from Brussels and 52 minutes from Liège, offers what no other Belgian park in our selection offers: half board or full board. At Christmas that means not spending 24 December doing the shopping. Indoor pool, spa and kids' club confirmed, La Roche-en-Ardenne 32 minutes away. Booking.com score 8.0/10 on 9 September 2026.

Landal Ferienpark Wirfttal (Stadtkyll, Eifel) is 1h 34m from Liège and 2h 36m from Brussels, in a valley where the Vulkaneifel volcano trail starts 3 minutes away and the Daun maars are at 38. The park confirms an indoor pool, a shop, a private sauna and a “dogs allowed” house with an enclosed garden. No public score is available, and the park has neither a confirmed kids' club nor an indoor playground.

Landal Miggelenberg (Hoenderloo, Veluwe), 3h 02m, is the only one of the four right up against a national park: De Hoge Veluwe is 19 minutes away and has no opening season on our pages, unlike the neighbouring Apenheul, which closes at the end of October. The Kröller-Müller museum is 15 minutes away, Het Loo palace at 22. Indoor pool, bowling and kids' club confirmed.

Twenty-four parks of the parks we analysed in detail confirm a private sauna in some of their accommodation, and fourteen confirm a spa on site. The distinction matters: the private sauna is in certain cottages only, and those are the ones that go first around 24 December.

Chalet Le Haut Lieu (Malmedy), 46 minutes from Liège, is a single eight-person chalet with a private hot tub and sauna, 14 minutes from the Signal de Botrange. It is not a park: no pool, no restaurant, no reception. No public score in our data.
Landal Warsberg (Saarburg), 3h 15m from Brussels, lists a two-person house with sauna, with Trier 36 minutes away and Saarburg old town at 11.
Landal Ferienpark Winterberg lists a luxury house with sauna and solarium, 5 minutes from the ski area.

What opens in December around the parks

Only one outing on our pages belongs to December alone: the Christmas market and Winterland in Hasselt, 37 minutes from Center Parcs Erperheide. That park remains the best-served Belgian park for indoor outings, with Plopsa Indoor Hasselt 35 minutes away and C-mine in Genk at 25. Booking.com score 8.2/10 on 9 September 2026.

The rest of the December programme comes from the outings that have no season at all: the Domaine des Grottes de Han, Stavelot old town, the Bastogne War Museum, the Saint-Pietersberg caves in Maastricht, the Sahara van Lommel. Landal Hoog Vaals deserves a mention of its own: 51 minutes from Liège, it sits 18 minutes from Aachen and 33 from Maastricht, two cities you can visit in December without depending on the sky.

Choosing without kidding yourself

Decide first whether you are going for the forest or for the snow. For snow you have to reach the Sauerland and reckon on more than four hours' driving; in the Ardennes it is a gamble.
Check that the accommodation, not just the park, advertises the sauna. Twenty-four parks confirm one in some of their units, which is not the same as in all of them.
Look at the indoor pool. In December it carries the whole afternoon, and two parks in our selection do not confirm one.
Book early for the week from 24 December to 2 January: it is the tightest period of the year with the operators, and the units with a sauna go before the rest.
Find a December outing within 40 minutes. A Christmas market, a cave or a museum saves the day the rain settles in.
